Teacups in Foxholes

Eyes on skies as light descends
And trips on brackened earth
Washing over airborne flesh
That tears withiners' worth
A world that's chaos quiet now
Unfree from rattling chains
The gold of breath alone now past
No beat of peace remains

With silence dead the music's gone
Bereft of light to rise
Just the crashing darkness struck
Down where the spirit lies
And now we have before us here
This war we long forswore
A pace of sluggish blood ahead
Before we get to more

Because there isn't ending now
The steadiness we felt
The peace we knew along the way
In godly moments knelt
The baby's crying now for good
Along the closing mud
Whatever we had hoped would stay
Is bathwater unplugged

So foxholes in and foxholes out
And atheists be damned
God may have made all splendid earth
But in this hole we're crammed
And there's no stop ahead to rest
No water breaks in hell
We can't look to the sky to cease
Its darkness in a well

If your hand on cups is shaking
And there's no shine left to shine
Reach down finally to the earth
The earth that's yours and mine
Unchipped you'll find a saucer there
As useless as the dawn
And you shall rest at last to find
Your still cup gleaming on
